Is Polling day important occasion for citizens?

Well, polling day is considered to be the most important moment to exercise our franchise in the democratic country like India. It is pertinent occasion for the citizens to elect the right person who will be representing and addressing the problems of people in the parliament. It comes once in a five years. For some of us day may be interesting and exciting as for the first time eligible to participate in the government.

Today, Delhi is all set go to the polls and its an important day for all those who resides in and around Delhi. Of course, for me day is as usual as other days because I have never voted in life. Still then I was excited to hear people talking in the refectory during the breakfast. As I come to the college I happened to ask a man who is early 60s and supposed to have voted for six times in the general election. With my broken Hindi I asked him, Uncle kya ap vote dene nai jaegi?, (i meant to ask him uncle are you not going for voting)? The man gave me surprising reply which I never expected. With his broken English he said ‘Politicians are thief. They come to us just before the election so that we may vote them. The moment they are voted to power their eyes are blinded with money and power. I do not want to vote any one as long as I am alive. I do not believe politicians. They are corrupted to the core.

It is not only this old man. There are millions of Indians who do not vote. Whether they do not believe politicians or democracy that is another question. India is in 15th general election. Each time candidates come to people to ask their votes with sweet promises but in return they got nothing. That is why people are sceptic. Past experiences have taught them good lesson.

Where do problems lie? Is it with politicians or people? The answers may with all of us. We have to be critical in electing politicians. We should not vote the candidates on the basis of caste, religion, belief etc. Let us not carry away by the speeches of politicians rather decide to elect intelligently those candidates who have passion for development of the country and people.

The people who don’t vote in the elections are the traitors of country. They are allowing the wrong persons to lead the country.
