Not Prevention But Suppression

Corporal punishment of students is a serious concern now India. Cases have been increasing in various parts of the country. Recently, in a Delhi based School a class X girl was thrust by her Mathematics teacher which caused her death. Yet in another incident a class II girl from the government school in Delhi was made to stand in the blistering sun for not doing her homework which led her death. Fight between teachers and students or students and students, sexual harassment to girls students. Rape incidents are common in the school and tuition centers. Hapless parents are confused as to what to do with the situations. A Sense of insecurity prevails in the minds of parents for their children.

The fundamental duty of teachers is to impart knowledge. They are supposed to be ideals, models, guides, and moulders of student’s character. They are considered knowledgeable and understanding. They are different personalities than ordinary people. Why such incidents are occurring again and again in various schools? It’s a serious and disturbing matter. Therefore we need to ask ourselves consciously and seriously where the problems lie and solve the problems.

Another leading factor may be low and irregularity of payment. Commercialisation in education is also inevitable point. There is less teachers and students relationship and contact. Lack of commitment and dedication among teachers is another issue. Sometime teachers are incapable in teaching their respective teaching subjects. Absence of teacher training in various states is another cause.

In order to improve the situation the government should intervene and set up a committee to monitor the schools. The commission should clearly state some guidelines for the appointment of teachers in schools. One year of compulsory training for teachers. Criteria of selecting teachers should be done with the consent of working committee. Some of the personal qualities must be looked into before appointing a teacher. Periodic teacher parent meeting should be held. There should be seminar and workshop to motivate teaching as a profession for teachers. There should be counselling for the teachers at least twice in the year. Permanent of appointing teachers should be reconsidered. May be teachers should appointed as contract based. The committee should introduce compulsory rules and regulations. Any teacher and student failing to maintain the rules and regulations should be given stringent punishment. If people in charge take into account seriously the issue it may be remedied.

Commercialization of education is responsible for such incidents to a larger extent. The private educational institutions appoint the teachers without following any proper process. Incapable teachers are recruited in these schools who can’t understand the psychology of students.

These incidents are the reflections of our educational system. Until we don’t change the dogmatic methods of teaching the students we can’t get rid of such incidents.

Corruption is another factor involved……..let me explain……I have observed (and am sure you must have also) that wives/relatives of the people with good PR are mostly appointed as teachers without any professional degree. I have a lady in neighborhood who is a teacher in the govt school because her husband is the body guard to the CM of the state.

Most of the teachers are unprofessional and the schools are not ready to take the responsibility, the students are the ultimate sufferers in such cases

The first and the foremost thing should be that the schools have to learn to take responsibility of the students. They have to make sure that each child is secure till the time it is in the school premises and during commuting from school to the house. It is annoying when the school authorities refuse to take responsibility of any such mishappening that occurs in the school.
